10 Ways To Relax & Stop Over Planning On Vacation

Hi Friends! Happy Wednesday!

I received a ton of questions about this top when I posted it to Instagram so I’m excited to share the full outfit post with you today. I wore this on day 2 of our Puerto Rico trip and our first outing to Old San Juan. I just love how comfortable & girly this outfit is. We stopped at a popular Popsicle place called Señor Paleta and I got a strawberry lemonade popsicle that was so good, but melted so quickly. I was literally hunched over trying to eat it and trying to make sure it didn’t get on my white top!

There are two kinds of vacation people in this world, the planner and the go with the flow. My mom is definitely a planner and a schedule person while my boyfriend is a go with the flow kind of guy. I realized that I fall somewhere in the middle.

I always want to get so much done on vacations that I can get caught up and end up not relaxing or enjoying myself. When my mom and I went to Miami two years ago, we were constantly going, trying to take outfit pictures and trying to explore Miami. We left that trip with only going to the beach once for like two hours and not going to the pool at all. When we got home, we needed a vacation from the vacation.

So when I booked this trip to Puerto Rico, I obviously knew I wanted to take some blog pics and to explore, but I also wanted to lay out by the pool and relax. Once we let go of the made up itinerary in our head, we had such a great time and it was a great balance of exploring and relaxing. So I wanted to share my 10 ways to relax on vacation and how to finally stop over planning!

1. MAKE SURE ALL OF YOUR DUCKS ARE IN A ROW BEFORE YOU LEAVE

You can’t expect to find ways to relax on vacation when you left a mess behind & didn’t finish your work. That’s just a fact.

Anytime I know my vacation is coming up, I always stay at work later just trying to get all of my work done. My boss & director have a really great outlook on work/life balance. Anytime I go on vacation, they always tell me to not worry about work and they’ve never bothered me while I was away. I also think it’s because I make sure I have all my ducks in a row before I leave. I make sure to wrap up any projects and anything I can accomplish, I do and what I can’t, I make sure to make a detailed list of everything that will have to be done, any task that may arrive and anything that can wait till I’m back.

I read once that millienials have a hard time taking vacation because they feel like they can’t leave their job. I definitely struggled with that, but what helps ease my mind is making sure I don’t give anyone a reason to complain about me while I’m gone. Prior to my recent vacay, I stayed late every single day so by the time my vacation rolled around it was well deserved.

I had a coworker who would never finish her work and wouldn’t even tell anyone what needed to be covered for her so the team was always lost when she was gone and she would complain when people bothered her while she was out. So long story short, if you want to enjoy your vacation, just make sure your ducks are in a row before you leave. And the same goes for your house. My mom is a big believer in always cleaning before we leave for vacation. After we’ve finished packing, she always does a quick clean. Naturally, it’s always like 2 in the morning so I think she’s crazy, but it is so nice to come home to a clean house and not have to worry about it.

2. THINK ABOUT HOW YOU WANT TO FEEL AT THE END OF YOUR VACATION

When I was younger, I would always let my emotions get in the way when I went on vacation. If I was visiting family, there would be times when I would just want to be alone (# only child problems) so I would go in a room and just be by myself. But, when it came time to leave, I would wish I spent more time with my family. Or if something upset me, I would throw the biggest fit and let it ruin my day, and when it came time to leave, I would always wish that I didn’t waste time being upset and throwing a fit.

So before you get upset about something or stress over something else or fight with your travel partner, just remember that you have been looking forward to this trip for months and you spent all this money and came all this way and you’re only here for a limited time. So soak it all in and make the most out of every moment. Make sure you leave with no regrets. I know for me personally, I’m an emotional person. The type of person that lets one small thing ruin my day so every time I go on vacation, I always tell myself that I’m going to go with the flow and just take it all in because I don’t want to be at the airport wishing I hadn’t wasted a day being upset.

3. UNPLUG FROM SOCIAL MEDIA – LIVE IN THE MOMENT

This one is a no brainer & something you’ve heard over and over again, but it’s important so I wanted to include it. Get off your phones!!! You’re on vacation. You should be relaxing and taking in all of your surroundings. Not looking at some small screen focusing on something or doing something that will still be there later.

When I went to Miami, I constantly had my phone glued to my hand. I was taking pictures, editing pictures, planning out my Instagram feed and making sure I was posting three times a day and trying to post to Snapchat. It was so much. During my most recent trip to Puerto Rico, I knew I wanted to find ways to relax and didn’t want to worry about all of that so I took a step back. I definitely posted my experience on Instagram stories, but it was mostly photos of my meals or if I stumbled upon a really scenic view or gave a recap at the end of the day. I made sure to experience and take everything in first hand before reaching for my phone.

Of course I’m human and at one point started to get wrapped up in Instagram. I was constantly trying to go through photos and edit them and was even sitting at a restaurant editing photos until my mother looked at me and was like “Don’t worry about it, just eat”. Whatever is on your phone, isn’t as important as what’s happening at the present moment so get off your phones and live in the moment.

4. BE FLEXIBLE – JUST GO WITH THE FLOW

As much of a planner as you try to be, I guarantee you, at least one thing will not go according to plan. And that’s okay. Just go with the flow. There are so many things you can’t predict during your vacation, especially if you’re visiting a new place. Anything from the weather, to a popular restaurant you can’t get reservations to, to just having to feel out your surroundings.

Prior to my trip, I looked up so many restaurants on yelp and bookmarked them. When we arrived, I pulled up Yelp and for the life of me I couldn’t narrow down which place I wanted to go to. Finally, my family said, let’s just go for a walk and see what we find. We came across so many great places just going out to explore with no plan at all.

Prior to my trip, the weather said it would rain every single day. I don’t stress much over tropical rain because it comes and goes quickly and is pretty unpredictable. So I was happy that when our travel day came, it was nothing but sunny skies and it was pretty sunny our entire stay. One morning we wanted to head to Old San Juan, but it looked a bit cloudy, so we decided to stay near the hotel and head to the pool for the morning and then head to Old San Juan at night which was an even better plan. So don’t stress over sticking to an itinerary or having your plans set in stone, be open to do anything and everything.

5. PRIORITIZE YOURSELF

Put yourself first on vacation. You deserve it and it’s why you took a vacation, to take care of yourself. So figure out what you want to do and just do it. Do you want to just lay out by the pool doing absolutely nothing? Then do it. Do you want to spend all of your money on food and try all these restaurants? Then do it. Do you want to take yourself off the map and unplug from your phone? Just do it. Whenever my family & I go on vacation, we don’t really talk or text anyone because we just want to relax and unplug. We also take out enough money for us to enjoy ourselves and be able to do different things and try different restaurants.

And plan your stay around what your priorities are. For my family, we wanted to relax by the pool and have easy access to the beach so although we went to explore Old San Juan everyday, it was nice coming back to unwind by the beach at the end of the day. So if your main goal is to get out and explore then pick a location so you can do just that, but if your goal is to find ways to relax, make sure you pick a hotel with those amenities so that when you get there you don’t have to plan a lot or think about transportation because everything is there for you.

6. YOU SPENT ALL THIS MONEY TO COME HERE – DON’T LET SOMETHING SMALL UPSET YOU

Vacations are expensive. Even if you’re traveling on a budget, it’s still costing you money. So get your money’s worth and enjoy every single second of it.

One night during my vacation, my boyfriend wanted to go to the pool so we put on our swimsuits and I was getting my pool bag ready until I heard this wooshing noise. I looked outside and it was a torrential downpour and it wouldn’t let up. Although he was upset, we had a pretty packed day so we just spent time enjoying the hotel room, cuddling up in those comfy sheets, enjoying the complimentary mini bar and watching a movie. There was also one night where the restaurant we wanted to go to had closed for the day and instead of getting upset, we just went out to try a different place.

Overall our vacation was so smooth and so great and it just seems so silly to get upset over something so small that you can’t control.

7. FORGET WHAT DAY & TIME IT IS – YOU DON’T HAVE TO STICK TO A NORMAL SCHEDULE

I think the best part of a vacation is when you forget what day it is and when what time is it, doesn’t really matter. My day to day life is always on a schedule and always planned out. Monday through Friday, I’m moving like clock work. I wake up at this time, leave the house at this time, eat lunch at this time, leave work at this time, eat dinner at this time and go to bed at this time. But, on vacation, you don’t have to stick to your normal schedule.

I remember the first day we got to Puerto Rico, we stayed at the pool until about 6:30. We headed back to the room and all had to shower before dinner and I remember thinking, if all of us have to shower and get ready, it’s going to be so late by the time we eat, there is no way we can go out and eat this late. But, it’s vacation so who cares what time it is! If I want to be eating tacos at 10pm on a Sunday then I can definitely do that.

You shouldn’t feel like you have to be doing this at this time or you should be finished with this at this time because you should be relaxing. Some mornings, we were at the pool at 8am, ate at around 11, went to the beach and then went to visit Old San Juan and other days we slept in and had a leisurely morning. It was great so just remember you can do whatever the hell you want on vacation!

8. DON’T SET TOO MANY GOALS – LEAVE ROOM OPEN AND LET THINGS HAPPEN NATURALLY

When I planned my trip to Puerto Rico, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. Visit Old San Juan, relax by the beach and by the pool and hit up as many restaurants as possible. We were there for five full days so I wanted to feel relaxed, but also get out and explore. At the end of my trip, I really felt as if I accomplished everything I set out to do and I left feeling relaxed and happy. We even hit up a few spots that we didn’t even plan to and just stumbled upon them and had so much fun.

I think leading up to a trip, we do so much research because there are so many travel guides out there. You see people doing this and that and you think “I want to do that too!” so you add it to the list and before you know it, your list is a mile long. Chances are you most likely won’t be able to get everything done and you’ll leave feeling super exhausted. Like, when I went to Miami and made so many plans and goals that by the time we left, I didn’t even have a chance to hit the pool and went to the beach once.

So just make a few big picture goals so you have an idea of what you want to do and let the rest happen naturally. I guarantee you, you will probably come across something to do that no one else has done or no one else wrote about and you’ll have more fun doing that.

9. IF YOU HAVE TO MAKE PLANS – MAKE BACK UP PLANS

Try as you might to go with the flow, but if you still insist on making plans, just make sure you have back up plans to your plans so you’re not disappointed. I think this is definitely more applicable if you like to vacation in cities rather than tropical destinations. Like if you want to go to a museum or a pop up shop or a specific restaurant, just make sure you have other plans in case your original one falls through for some reason.

For me, the first day that I explored Old San Juan, I was so obsessed with the colorful houses and the scenery and was already planning when I would come back and which outfits I would shoot where. It’s tricky with tropical destinations because the sun is so harsh and at times it’s so windy because of the ocean breeze and for the first few days I found myself getting upset because it was either too windy or too sunny in a spot I wanted to shoot at. So instead of just picking one spot, I decided we would just leave the camera out and photograph different places we stumbled upon as we went. And I ended up loving the photos more when we would just wing it.

Nine times out of ten, your back up plans are even better than your original plans.

10. GO SHOPPING & PLAN YOUR OUTFITS OUT

I love prepping for a trip. It can be stressful at times, but I just find it so exciting. I especially love shopping and planning out my outfits for a trip. You’re ten times more confident with your clothes on vacation than you are in your everyday life and you have more fun with it.

For me personally, I love traveling with a suitcase of new clothes and I always prep my outfits beforehand so I know exactly what accessories go with which outfit when I arrive. So when it’s time to get ready, I just pull up my phone and decide which outfit I want to wear for that day. I think it’s just one less thing for you to worry about and it helps you get out the door faster because instead of spending time in the mirror trying things on, you already  know exactly what you like and you can get out there and explore.
