5 Things You Don’t Want To Do, But Probably Should

Happy Wednesday!

Sharing the last outfit photo from Puerto Rico!! It’s always bittersweet when vacation photos end because I love looking back on photos and reliving those memories, but we are finally moving on to all things fall!

On another note, it has been a WEEK and we are only halfway through it. Work has been absolutely crazy and I’ve gotten home the past two nights around 10. There’s just so much going on and it’s been really overwhelming. But, I digress. I’ll save my complaining for my Friday Favorites post.

Anyways, today we’re talking about being an adult, from the expert in adulthood herself…ME! Jk. Jk. Jk. I watched Frozen twice this weekend and I complain to my mom when someone at work gets snippy with me so a real life adult, I am probably not. But, jokes aside, I feel like I’ve learned a thing or two these past few years in my orientation into adulthood so I wanted to share. Specifically, I wanted to share the top 5 things you don’t want to do, but probably should.

5 Things You Don’t Want To Do, But Probably Should:

GO TO THE DOCTOR!

Seriously. Go. It’s simple as that. Go to the dentist, the family doctor, the eye doctor and especially the gynecologist.

Listen, my idea of a fun time isn’t hanging with my gyn, but it’s an annual appointment that is essential to your health. If you’re still on your parent’s insurance, take advantage and if you’re on your own plan, take advantage!! I mean, you’re already paying for it. I know it’s time consuming, not fun, terrifying to make an appointment over the phone and might cost you money, but it’s important.

You only have one life and one body so you might as well make sure you’re healthy so you can live it up.

PULL  YOURSELF OUT OF DEBT & LEARN HOW TO MANAGE YOUR FINANCES!

Seriously. It’s not cute anymore. I know it’s easier said than done and I’m not saying you should be paying off your student loans in one year. But, what I am saying is, you should start taking steps to pay off any debts you have and start building your credit.

Stop deferring your student loans and start paying them. I promise it’s not as bad as it seems. I’ve been paying my student loans off monthly for a few years now and I barely bat an eye at this point. And start paying off your credit card bills, stop swiping when you know you shouldn’t and close any credit cards you don’t need. I can promise you, that credit card you opened at that one store, that one time, just to get 20% off your purchase isn’t doing you any favors in the future.

I had a friend who was thousands in debt, but couldn’t figure out why she was in debt. Once she printed out her credit card statements and asked me to review it with her, I could see clear as day what the problem was. I know we all like to have “treat yo self” days, but you can’t use that to justify every purchase. It’s just not realistic to get your nails done, hair done, shop, go out with friends, go to concerts, travel, order takeout, grocery shop and pay bills. Unfortunately we have to pay bills so can’t get rid of that, but try to narrow down your vices. If you treated yourself to a new sweater, then maybe skip the nail appointment for a week or two.

OPEN A SAVINGS ACCOUNT & CONTRIBUTE TO IT!

My mom works in banking so she’s always taught me how to be smart with money. When I started working and making a paycheck, she made sure I contributed to my savings account even if it was pretty much pennies, she made sure some part of my paycheck went into my savings.

But, I have friends who don’t have a savings account or don’t contribute or see the point to a savings account and let me tell you, I am shook. I’ve heard every excuse in the book, but I am telling you, it is very much realistic and possible for you to contribute to a savings account. It doesn’t have to be hundreds of dollars, it could be just $10. Every dollar counts.

To me, a savings account is money for a rainy day. Life comes at you hard and fast, you are not an exception and you truly never know what’s coming so you have to be prepared. Start saving because your future self will thank you!!

HAVE A FEW GO-TO RECIPES IN YOUR BACK POCKET!

I’m not Rachel Ray. I will most likely never be a contestant on The Great British Bake Off. I mean, I managed to mess up a Kylie Jenner recipe. It takes me a half hour to cut an onion. While I’m not the best chef, I actually do enjoy it. I feel like I can unwind and focus.

But, with that being said, whether you enjoy cooking or not, I think you should learn a few recipes that you can fall back on. Like when you really don’t have the funds to order take out again or if everything is closed and you’re already tired of everything or if you’re trying to impress a loved one, learn a recipe or two.

I feel like I cooked so much when I was on Whole30 and I also tried to learn how to cook so I can share my experience on the blog so I have a few go-to recipes I love. I make a great Whole30 approved turkey chili, also a Whole30 approved potato & spinach & salmon cake, an orzo pesto chicken soup and of course Kylie Jenner’s shrimp tacos. So take yourself to Trader Joes and get inspired because it’s not as scary as it looks.

Okay, I’m definitely still scared of using knives, but other than that, it’s not that bad!

LEARN HOW TO SAY NO!

Naturally I saved the hardest for last. It’s hard saying no, whether to family, friends or at work. It’s hard to feel like you’re letting someone down or disappointing someone and it’s worse when someone won’t take no for an answer!

But, what I’ve learned and what I’m still learning is that you can’t be everything to everyone and you can’t make everyone happy. And on top of that, if you continuously say yes and become a yes girl (or boy!) people will continue coming to you and might even start to walk all over you because they know you won’t say no. I’m telling you, its something I struggle with because I want to make everyone happy and be everything for everyone. But, there comes a time when you have to put yourself first.

So learn how to say no. If your friend wants to go to dinner, but you’ve had a rough week and just want to go home, then say that! If you’re overwhelmed at work and someone throws something your way, learn how to say no (if applicable and if you can). I’m not saying become a no girl (or boy!), but learn how to prioritize and learn how to put yourself first and saying no when you need to.
