PERSONAL STYLE OUTFIT:

Dress :: Bag :: Shoes :: Sunnies

A Little Background

I grew up reading Seventeen Magazine and I took all the quizzes to determine what my personal style was. You know those quick questionnaires where if you have mostly A’s you’re preppy or girly or edgy. And what about makeup? Are you glam, natural or a bronzed goddess? And if you are petite, you should only wear mini skirts to elongate your legs. It was very black and white and encouraged you to pick one style preference and stick with it.

As I’ve gotten older and finally feel comfortable with my personal style, I realize that style isn’t black and white. Most people aren’t just girly or just edgy. I went through the Abercrombie phase, the J.Crew phase, even a Banana Republic phase. Even when I graduated college and started a blog, I went though a “edgy boyfriend jeans” phase. Don’t get me wrong, I still live for a boyfriend jean but I no longer feel the need to solely wear that and to let that define me.

If I wore this pink dress two years ago, I would have felt like a fraud. But these days, I feel like its just my personal style. For starters, I instantly fall in love with anything that has a tropical inspired print, such as pineapples and palm trees. So I’m already living for this dress. You like what you like and that’s the great thing about personal style. You don’t have to stay in your own lane. I couldn’t describe my personal style in one word because it’s truly different every day and truly based on my mood and which side of me I wanna show that day. And that’s A okay. It’s definitely a journey to figuring out and becoming comfortable in your own personal style so let’s talk about it!

Personal Style – Try Anything & Everything

Seriously, try every last trend and style you want… even if you look back and regret it. If you look back at my old blog posts, I constantly talk about how I was originally scared of a certain trend or silhouette. But, once I went for it, I ended up falling in love. I look back at those posts and still love some trends that I was finally brave enough to try, but I also look back and think “woah girl, what were you thinking?!” and that’s okay. I even look back at posts where I was so confident and thought something was so my style and I have regrets. Style is constantly evolving and it’s okay to let go and roll with the change.

Personal Style – Don’t Limit Yourself

For some reason, we feel the need to define our personal style in one word. Girly, preppy, edgy and if you’re feeling fancy, bohemian. But, the reality is, most people are not 100% bohemian all the time. And once you pick your one style word, you almost pressure yourself to embrace that and only shop for pieces you feel fit into this mold you put yourself into. So don’t limit yourself to one style and one word. Mix & match because I think that’s what truly defines personal style. If you love being girly, then wear a flirty dress, but throw a leather jacket over it to spice it up. Or if you’re more athletic, rock a track jacket, but throw on some heeled booties or heels to mix it up. Style is supposed to be fun and nothing is limiting you except yourself!

Personal Style – Be Open to Inspiration

When I went through my “edgy boyfriend jeans” phase, that’s all I wanted to see. I would go on Pinterest and search “boyfriend jeans” and see how people styled theirs. It’s the only thing I wanted to wear and felt like that was my style alone. The problem there was that I wasn’t opening myself up to anything else. I just assumed that was my style since it was the only thing I wanted to embrace. When trying to find your own personal style, be open to all inspiration, not just those that you feel align with you now. When I go on Pinterest to look for inspo, I’ll do a generic search like “women’s summer style” or “summer dresses” to see what’s out there. I even make a point to search for bloggers who have different styles than I do just to get a fresh perspective.

Personal Style – Go All the Way

For the longest time, I couldn’t define my style at all, even with one of the generic words. So what I did, and what I still like to do, is try a certain trend and style and give it my all. If I’m feeling the athleisure trend, then I’m giving you full sporty spice with the sneaker and a cap. If I’m feeling preppy then I’m doing a curly ponytail, a flair skirt and a pink sweater. All total style stereotypes that I’m sure I look ridiculous sometimes. But, I go all the way and try it and then pull back from there. Maybe I loved the sneaker, but whey does it have to be with a cap and leggings? Maybe I can do a sneaker with a dress. Mixing and matching for a healthy balance.

Personal Style – Establish your basics

I’m a strong believer that you should invest in the basics. But, I’m also a strong believer that a basic is different for everyone. It doesn’t have to be a simple, classic tee. It could be something that you love and feel as if it defines you For me a few basics are an off the shoulder top, a fun pineapple printed item, a boyfriend jean and a bomber or moto jacket. While some of those may be ridiculous or trendy to some, it’s what I love and swear by. So it’s okay to have your own version of basics. If you love leopard, then make that a basic. There are no rules to style!
