Happy Monday! Before we get into today’s post, I just wanted to take a moment to talk about these jeans! They’re called the modern vintage straight jeans. They’re cropped (although on me they’re a little long!) and slightly flare out at the bottom. So different for me, but I kind of love them. You guys know I stick with my black skinnies or a dark skinny so this is such a different silhouette for me, but it’s refreshing to try something new! Anyways, today’s post is dedicated to social media and I’m specifically talking about why it’s okay to take a break from social media.
For Your Mental Health
I spend a lot of time on twitter and sometimes it’s too much. Between the politics, the hurricanes, the fires out west, the earthquake, anything involving animal cruelty, it’s a lot to take in. Sometimes I sit there and my heart just breaks and I’m shocked and I get super depressed about everything. With the way the world is today, I want to stay informed on what’s going on. But, I think it’s important to know that you don’t have to soak up all this information all at once. You don’t have to overwhelm yourself. It’s okay to take a step back and focus on the positive in this world rather than all the negative. A lot of times, we don’t pay attention or care for our mental health. A lot of people still don’t take it seriously. But, I’m a strong believer in taking a step back to recharge. You can’t help anyone if you’re a mess, so focus on yourself and pay attention to your feelings.
To Focus On Other Things
At the end of July, I made a decision to take a step back from Instagram. I was constantly stressing over it and making myself depressed by comparing myself to others. My blog was affected because I was too busy focusing on Instagram so I decided to take a break. The reality is, we can’t control any of the social media platforms. But, we can control our blogs and for me personally, that’s why I started a blog. I wanted an outlet that I could control and that I could post whatever I wanted to. I still haven’t posted on Instagram and although I plan to soon, it’s not something I stress over anymore.
If your goal is to become an Instagram star or twitter famous then that’s great, put all of your effort and attention there. But, if you started a blog or you’re just flat out busy, it’s okay to take a step back and focus your attention on other things. When I’m at work, I’m at work. I don’t stress over my social media presence because I love my job, I take it seriously and I want to put my energy into being amazing there. I also love my site and I want to put my energy towards building it up not tearing it down because I’m worried about an algorithm.
To Live Your Life
I think when we used to joke and say “pics or it didn’t happen” and over time it became more of a reality. Trying to document every last thing and make our lives seem so perfect on social media. I used to be on my phone all the time. When I was having lunch with my mom, I would be on the phone and on a date with my boyfriend, I would be on my phone. What I was currently doing and who I was with was taking a back seat so that I could make it seem like my life was awesome on social media. If you’re living life, loving life and want to share then great. But, it’s okay to put the phone down and pay attention to what’s going around you. Keeping up with social media shouldn’t be a burden and you shouldn’t feel pressured all the time. Live your life and appreciate the time with your loved ones.
